Wild Leeks
Share
First hike of the year till the kid called home. Headed out for marsh marigolds, swamp cabbage and these ramps. AKA wild leeks, Allium Tricoccum and to the chipawaa Siga'gawunj or Prarie skunk plant. Technically a leek but shares traits with both onions and garlic. One of the first food plants to open up in spring. Gotta be careful harvesting these guys. Has a very long life cycle, up to a decade from seed to root. The location is usually hidden because of over harvesting. Folks are so crazy over this guy that entire patches are decimated. One word Honestly Harvested. Guidelines are to pick 5% of the patch and leave the rest be. Only grabbed a few for pictures I'm only interested in the leaves. Trying to decide between paste, infused viniger or infused oil.
